I finished reading Pride and Prejudice Friday morning. I did it. I managed to finish the first book on my reading list.
Pride and Prejudice- A Song for the Dying
- Jane Eyre
- The Roving Party
- The Handmaid’s Tale
- The Fork, the Witch and the Worm
- Dracula
- The Inheritance
- The Book Thief
- The Martian
- Persuasion
- Memoirs of a Geisha
- Anna Karenina
Just eleven more to go… and the other list that I have.
Pride and Prejudice ended in a way that had me tossing the book aside when I finished. I enjoyed reading it and was satisfied with the ending, but only satisfied, not exactly happy about it. It was the same with Sense and Sensibility as well, the ending came abruptly; the only difference is that Elinor was happy in the end and so I had no complaints, whereas I was invested in Mr Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship and so the final conclusion being “oh, they got married and moved away and the end” really left much to desire. I was also annoyed that very few of the more frustrating characters had developed better personalities or been appropriately punished for the bullshit they pulled in the end. The reality of it, in the end, was a bit too close to home. Lydia and Whickham are still trash and Mrs Bennett is still trash and Mr Bennett confused me and Lady Catherine was a grand prick. But I guess at the end of the day, that is how they were written, and they were likely meant to perceived that way.
I don’t really have much more to say on the book because I think it really was summed up in my previous post, the only difference being that my expectations were either realised or not. Overall, I liked it and am keen to keep reading more of Austen. The style of the writing and the difference in plot progression was interesting and I really like it. I think one of the things I like most was the blatant passive aggression, the wit and humour that was basically just conversations between salty people.
This is probably a disappointing closing post on the book, but I really can’t think of much more to talk about. It’s in my ‘I might re-read it one day’ category. I think I might even watch the movie. Ah, but time will tell.
