I haven’t written a lot of horror. I’ve written a lot of horrible things (in quality and content), but it’s mostly about the horror of the situation the character is in, rather than the scare factor. Or maybe that’s “thriller”? That’s always confused me a little. It’s thriller for scares and horror for gore? Well, in this case, I’m talking about the Stephen King kind of writing, and he’s the King of Horror, isn’t he? And so, I haven’t written a lot of horror.

The reason being is that when I was about fifteen, I was experimenting with it a bit, and found that it wigged me out and got into my head. My anxiety and fears were a lot worse back then, and so it might be different now, but I just gave myself extra unnecessary fear. Interestingly enough, I can read it easily. I haven’t read a lot of Stephen King’s work, admittedly, but if he’s the King of Horror and that’s the benchmark, I can handle written horror. It gave me the chills, but it didn’t get in my head like it would when I would try to write it.

Perhaps I should start experimenting with it again. As part of my endeavour to dip my fingers into all sorts of genres. I wonder if I’ll creep myself out as much as back then. But what would be my staples for horror? For I don’t find the dark and cats to be inherently scary. The dark isn’t what I fear, it’s what wraps itself in its crisp blanket, with the face of a human that I do.
