When I sit down to read, I usually plan on sinking into the book for a while, and so I don’t really read in situations where I’m going to need to break away from the book, like on the bus. I don’t read at cafes because I rarely go there on my own and conscious of other people needing to use the space. I don’t go to the library much anymore, and even then, I would go to study and research and so didn’t read leisurely.
I have three favourite spots that I cycle through; my bed, a couch/armchair and outside on a blanket. I need to be in a spot that I can change my positions comfortably because I’m that type of person that will sit in a crook for part of the book and then be on my stomach for another part and then almost be upside down for another. Getting into comfortable positions under good lighting is also important. I used to read by candlelight when I was younger, and would like to do again when my room isn’t so flammable because most of my life is crammed in here, but my eyesight is a lot worse than back then and so I want good lighting to avoid headaches (so a lot more candles).
When I move with my partner, I’m hoping to actually set up a reading corner that we can share, and it will likely either have a big beanbag or a really comfy armchair. One day, when I hopefully own my own place, I want a great big armchair that I can fill with cushions and blankets to mould it as I please, while I continue to read in a corner of books, plants and candles … and an outside egg-swing.
