One thing that I often think about is the balance between my personal and professional life when it comes to social media. Of course, this blog talks about some personal things because it’s about my development as a writer, but sometimes I wonder if I’m blurring the line too much between a writing blog and just a blog. The same goes with my writing Twitter, sometimes I’m not sure if I should follow people who have a lot more to with the part of my life that isn’t really as relevant to me as a writer, such as YouTubers, actors, etc. I mostly follow writers and activists on my Twitter. This might just be a me thing that I’m worrying about for no reason but it is something that I think about when I’m on my Twitter or blogging while watching YouTube at the same time.
I think I need to actually look into what it means to have a ‘professional profile’ on social media, and whether or not I need to find that balance line. Later in this semester I’ll be doing more work and development on professional skills that will hopefully help me in the writing industry once I’ve graduated and have been thrown into the world.
My goal at the moment is learn what I need to do, develop what skills I need to have and hopefully I’ll be where I need to be, knowing all of the things that I don’t even know I need to know. Like grants and proposals and which publishers you should try for and how to network and how to write certain genres etc. etc. Writing is definitely not just what I thought it was when I realised I wanted to make it my career, and I need to make sure I work on my professional skills if I want to make it my career.
