Because I spent this march taking a different kind of walk and with people, I didn’t take a lot of time to write my ideas down as I went, although we did have discussions about topics such as the Djabwurrung Birthing Trees being bulldozed for the sake of a highway, the legal system and Indigenous Australian incarceration rates. It’s important to know and understand the foundation of these types of systemic racism because it helps when you have to educate those who try to deny the reality of it. Being more aware is also important.
Be more culturally aware and be more culturally sensitive: do this by knowing what you need to. And if you don’t know what you need to do, start with educators who have the time to help you, look to sites like Kindred Spirits or IndigenousX, and build a bigger list of sources from there. Make sure you do your due diligence though, too many people are getting wrapped up in fake-news and make their opinion from sources they haven’t bothered to check it. Australia has a lot of manipulated history and it’s important we take the initiative to look past this.
