I was planning on making a more thorough post about this book later but after seeing Anita Heiss’s post on Twitter, I’m quickly going to recommend it now.

Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia. I feel as if I have spoken about this before but cannot be sure, but even if I have, I will again mention it. This is a great example of learning to understand the life of Indigenous Australians by Indigenous Australians. Much of what is ‘taught’ in schools is westernised and censored, or just not included. Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia is a perfect way to gain an insight into the reality First Nations People face. This book is filled with the life stories of dozens, and if you don’t challenge the way ‘Australia’ has/is treating First Nations People after reading this, then discourse with you is probably not very desirable.

I already own this book, along with a few others of Heiss’s (I’m building my collection now I can afford to buy them rather than loan them) and so instead I made a direct donation to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

If you would like to do the same, you can do that here: Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

You can find a copy at a few different bookstores, and in three of the leading bookstores such as Dymocks, QBD and Booktopia.

Also take a look at Heiss’s other works and, as I always recommend, Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu.
