The trees in her backyard were filled with hanging jars, each with wreaths around their necks fitted with floral decorations such as small flowers and pretty ferns. It looked like a collection of strung up and decorated jars lit up by tea candles, but once you looked closer, you could see that the lights were moving. Each jar was a cosy glass room for a fairy, whose wings glowed in the moonlight, turning them into dozens of pretty hanging lanterns that lit themselves each evening, rocky as they settled in amongst beds of petals and leaves they’d gathered during the day. Some of the collected little stones and others collected bits of paper and plastic, each jar being unique to the fairy that nestled in there. There were jars with ‘borrowed’ sweets and swinging jars of fairies who could stand the motion. Some of them had collections of random found objects, like pegs and marbles. Feathers protruded from others and actual birds joined some higher up in the trees. In was a little community created out of recycled spaghetti sauce, pickle and olive jars, from which echoed a glassy singing occasionally.
