I find it difficult to write in public unless I’m in a place where I know for certain that no one can see what I’m writing. I write a lot easier when doing it by hand than with a laptop or my phone because books lie flat on the table and my handwriting isn’t legible from a distance or a glance. Little by little I’m becoming more comfortable with writing in public and I think it’s because it was linked to my anxiety, and now I’ve mostly got that under control, I don’t feel so restricted. I would like to try writing in cafes and food places and parks though, if not just for the novelty of it but to observe a new space. The next best thing would be to be able to watch people without it being deemed creepy, like from a tall building or something. Sometimes unorthodox writing spaces (for me) make me a little more productive. Like the few times I’ve sat with my computer or notebook at MOS Burger or a cafe. It’s a nice change of space. I like writing in the food court at uni as well. Of course, every public writnig space is more or less closed now. I think it would be fascinating to go out into the city and write now but I’d rather not get into any real trouble just for being out in public for a reason that merely pertains to my curiosity. The more people are not allowed in public the more appealing going out in public sounds. I think I might look into bookshop cafes, something that’s there specifically for people to go and sit in for long periods of time and write whilst enjoying the atmosphere. Not until this pandemic ends, of course, but I think it might be something nice and new to try to encourage me to write in new environments and get over my lack of confidence in my writing through making it easier to write in public. It might bring some more flavour to my social settings in my writing.
