In my life, I’ve overheard many conversations because I have somewhat a lack of presence and, more so today, because I’m trusted. People don’t watch what they say around me. And I hear some funny things, some interesting things and some unpleasant things. One of my favourite things to overhear are conversations between children and their parents (or just other adults in general) because of the things they say. Because I work in a supermarket, I hear a lot of these. There was a day when a little girl and her mother were by the eggs and I was working not too far from it. The mother picked up a carton and immediately, the little girl started to tell her off. ‘No, no, no! You can’t get the cage eggs! You have to get the other ones! Not the cage eggs, mummy!’ I almost laughed a little. I was pretty startled that she was aware enough to chastise her for trying to buy cage eggs. Most kids that come through don’t understand much about the world, including that the fruit has to grow on trees and ripen and then be delivered. It’s not instantaneous. It was kind of a relief.
