I have been doing research into what I will need to know for marketing roles, my attention to detail and knack for graphics arrangement can only carry me so far. I didn’t have any formal education in the field so I was winging it and learning on my own at my old job. I have a good eye for aesthetics but that only carries you so far, especially now that video form is huge in marketing with TikTok and reels and whatnot. I’ve always self-taught myself how to use a lot of different software as I need them but I’m going to need to have more efficient knowledge of software I will be expected to use. I don’t think companies will want me to spend an hour mucking about with software to learn how to do a dozen fun things ( 〃..). I have experience to bring but I’m unsure of how much that weighs up against certificates etc.
So many acronyms, so many platforms.
I don’t think I need to know much more to go back into publishing as I have my degree and experience to back it up. Of course, I need to brush up on my skills and knowledge of the industry but I’ve always been confident in my editing and proofreading (though it still feels unusual to claim. I got bullied a lot for being “smart” or a “smart arse” when I was younger so saying I’m good at something feels like snobbish boasting. I’m working on it (ᵕ,—ᴗ—,)). I think the publishing industry has a much smaller turnover than the marketing industry though, and so I’ve been focusing more on improving my marketing skills.
