I haven’t written in a while because for a long time I just didn’t know what I was doing. But the semester is now over for me, all my assignments are done, and I’m just on holidays awaiting grade releases.

This semester was strangely hard for me. I’ve felt off for a while now but feel like I had worse things to worry about in the first two semesters. Maybe I found this content and assessment harder?

I’ve tried to be a better student but it’s hard trying to force yourself into habits that you don’t have. I feel like I did my work a lot better than last year but I couldn’t keep it going for as long (if that makes any sense). I love creating schedules and I love planning a direction but often find them both difficult to adhere to. I think I did a lot better at it this semester but just burnt out way too quickly.

I’ve started reading more again. I’ve been reading a few different novels at a time but have recently started ploughing through the first Game of Thrones novel. It’s been a while since I enjoyed reading so much. I’ve also started some more important reading, picking up Dhuuluu-Yala: To Talk Straight by Anita Heiss. I’ve also started Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia and finished Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu at the start of the year. I’m finding broadening my understanding and knowledge of Indigenous Culture and Peoples more important than reading ‘literature’ like Great Expectations.

As an overview of my semester, these are the classes and assessments I had:

KKB191 – Am I black enough? Indigenous Australian Representations

  • Group Presentation
  • Reflection/Essay

KWB211 – Creative Writing: Style and Technique

  • Portfolio 1
  • Portfolio 2
  • Presentation

KWB214 – The Artful Life: from Memoir to Fiction

  • Piece of Memoir
  • First Chapter of an Autobiography

KWB310 – Editing and Developing the Manuscript

  • Peer-to-Author Process and Reflection Essay
  • Analysis Essay
  • Exam

I only have grades for the ones in blue and they’re 50/50 good and bad (well, average-ish). When I get all of my grades back I’m going to write reflections for each unit, mostly detailing what I did, how I thought I did and how I actually did. I think these reflections will be good for me. I will also do reflections on any creative pieces I’ve written.
